How to make a good first impression at an interview

Job interviews sometimes can be intimidating. Say you’ve applied for one of the business jobs in Ghana from Ghana’s biggest classifieds website, Tonaton, and you’ve been shortlisted and now you have to pass the interview. My guess is you’re competing with several other candidates for the role. Therefore it is of absolute importance that you make a good first impression.

How does one do this?

From the start you have to make sure you’re appropriately dressed. It is better to be overdressed for an interview than to be underdressed. As a rough guide, you probably wouldn’t need a suit for an entry level role. But you have to be dressed formally.

Immediately you enter the interview room you’re supposed to greet them and, as is required by Ghanaian convention, don’t sit until you’re offered a seat.

With that done, you’re sure to establish yourself as someone willing to do what it is required to get and ultimately keep the job. And that should save you from being overlooked before you have the chance to make your case.

  1. I recently sat on the other side of an interview and most of the candidates didn’t make good first impressions … the least of what’s expected, but the oga at the top had some intriguing interest in it.
