The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe constituency, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on relevant authorities to urgently address the “persistent and unannounced power outages” in his constituency. He recognised that while the outages may be due to a fault in the national electricity distribution system, Weija-Gbawe has been the hardest with some communities experiencing continuous blackout for more than four days.
He noted, “the unplanned outages occur without prior notice or communication from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo)”. These unannounced power cuts are leading to widespread disruptions with dire consequences to economic activity and compromising delivery of essential services, he added.
Meanwhile, the ECG since January, 2025 has been publishing announcements of emergency power outages on its website and official social media accounts. Our checks indicate that, ECG made such announcement on its “X” account of a power outage in some municipalities in the Ashanti Region due to “multiple cable faults at the Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi”. Additionally, there have been other announcements of outages in the Greater Accra Region attributed to either a rainstorm in parts of Accra or merely a transformer fault.
However, for the Second Deputy Minority Whip, the several engagements he has made with officials of ECG have yielded no meaningful progress, while GRIDCo on the other has assured residents of addressing the challenge.
“We therefore make a respectful but firm appeal to the ECG, GRIDCo, and the Ministry of Energy to take immediate and decisive action to permanently address this issue. The people of Weija-Gbawe deserve better.”, he said
