Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Finance has announced the next batch of coupon payments under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme for 2025. The Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that it has paid a sum of GH¢9,698,815,220.17 to bondholders who agreed with the government to postpone matured coupon payments as part of a debt restructuring arrangement in 2022. This figure now brings up total disbursements made in 2025 alone to GH¢19.4 billion.

Further to that, the government has established two sinking fund accounts to support the repayment of its bonds maturing in 2026, 2027, and 2028, a move officials describe as necessary to provide a financial safety net to reinforce debt sustainability. The statement added, the measure will “provide liquidity buffers to ensure the timely redemption of loan obligations” emphasizing the government’s assurance to investors and the public of prompt payment of its debts including DDEP.

The DDEP was launched in 2022 as part of a broader economic recovery programme in Ghana under which the country sought for an extended credit facility from the International Monetary Fund for a $3 billion bailout accordingly approved in May 2023. However, official records indicate that Ghana’s debt treatment terms will provide a debt service relief of $2.8 billion during the programme period expected to end in 2026.
