Ghana gov’t considers listing state power companies

Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, has suggested listing GRIDCO and VRA, big players in the country’s energy sector, on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

This is similar to what I suggested last year and I hope the plan is able to be implemented. However, we have to ensure that it does not become a case of SSNIT, the national pension fund, acquiring the heavily indebted power companies when they are finally listed. That would just be shifting the problem around instead of solving it.

We need private investors to own shares in the companies and ensure transparent and efficient management as well as sustainable pricing of power.
