Listed firms on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) continue to provide a bright spot in an investment climate desperately in need of winners. After starting the year of wrong, stocks rallied to gain 12% for the year by March and have kept up that level in April. The GSE-CI is up 12.18% for the year despite financial stocks losing a whopping 14.34%.
The release of several FY2022 and Q12023 financial reports of banks showed huge losses sparked by writedowns of the value of their government securities following the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). These losses are likely to keep weighing down on the performance of financial stocks as investors revise their valuations of financial companies due to their much weaker asset base.
